How to run a Boost the Budget campaign (step by step)

Seven steps, in order. Used by sports clubs, supporters' trusts and community-owned clubs to turn a fundraising idea into a live, compounding campaign — without the paperwork.

1

Set a target that means something

Don't pluck a number from the air. Tie it to a real cost — a new floodlight, a kit refresh, the season minibus, the under-18s' away kit. Supporters fund causes they can picture.

2

Build a branded pledge page

Your crest. Your colours. A short story about why this matters. One photo of the team. A live progress bar. That's the page — nothing more, nothing less. Done in minutes.

3

Create reward tiers

Five tiers works well: £5, £10, £25, £50, £100. Each one with a small thank-you — programme name, a training shirt, hospitality, a stadium plaque. Costs you very little, lifts the average pledge a lot.

4

Offer one-off and monthly

Monthly pledges are the secret weapon. A £10 one-off is £10. A £10/month pledge is £120 in year one — and it renews. Always offer both side by side.

5

Add a prize draw — no licence

Optional, but it lifts conversion. We run it as a prize draw with a genuine free-entry route, so it sits outside lottery rules — no Gambling Commission licence, no council registration. Pledgers receive entries automatically as a thank-you.

6

Launch with a story and a deadline

Pin a launch post. Email your supporter list. Match-day announcement. Put it in the programme. A 28-day window with a visible deadline beats an open-ended campaign every time.

7

Report, thank and retain

Within 48 hours of close: a public total, a thank-you video, a list of what gets funded. Then monthly pledger updates. Retention is where the real budget boost happens — year two should always beat year one.

The admin trap

Most campaigns die in month three — not because supporters stopped giving, but because the volunteer running the spreadsheet got tired. Standing orders go unmatched. Thank-yous get missed. The database degrades. A campaign that runs itself outlasts one that runs on goodwill.

Running a campaign — your questions

Most clubs do best with a 28-day live window — long enough to compound momentum, short enough to keep urgency. Monthly pledges then continue beyond the campaign close.
