The Final Challenge

In this week’s blog, David Broadbent, our Business Development Manager for Sport, discusses the upcoming Challenge Cup Final weekend, and Play Fund Win’s partnership with The Rugby Football League.

For the Rugby League world, all roads lead to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend for the very first time. The impressive North London venue plays host to a double-header of finals on Saturday. Challenge Cup weekend is always one of the year’s highlights, with supporters travelling from all over the country to experience the special atmosphere and watch some top-quality rugby league.

First up on the day is the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final, where Championship promotion chasers Leigh Centurions and Featherstone Rovers go head-to-head. Featherstone won the trophy last season at Wembley and will be looking to retain it against a Leigh side who, this season, are looking to bounce straight back to Super League. There’s little to separate the two and it should make for a fascinating clash. The two met earlier in the Championship season, with Featherstone coming out on top that day. Both teams will bring a strong, vocal, support to the capital, where the stage is set for a classic.

The Betfred Challenge Cup then takes centre stage, the showpiece event of the Rugby League calendar for fans, and a final for the history books, taking place in an all-new venue for 2022. Wigan Warriors overcame current Super League Champions St Helens in the first semi-final, narrowly beating their bitter rivals 20-18 in what was a thrilling encounter. Wigan are looking to win this competition for a record 20th time, though have gone nine years since they last collected the trophy. Wigan will start as slight favourites against the Huddersfield Giants, but this is a cup final, so you simply never know. Huddersfield’s last appearance in the final was in 2009, but you have to go back to 1953 to find the last time they managed to win the competition. The Giants have made an impressive start to their Super League campaign, and are currently sitting within the play-off places. They dispatched Hull KR 25-4 in the semi-final to secure their place. The Giants came out on top in the most recent meeting of these two sides in the Super League this season and the stage is set for a memorable final.

At Play Fund Win we are committed to supporting Community Rugby League. This is the second year in partnership with the RFL, as we host the Community Rugby League Raffle. Entrants have the opportunity to support one of over 300 community rugby clubs. At just £5 per ticket, not only will you be supporting your local community club, but you’ll also have the chance to win either a cash prize, or some fantastic rugby prizes, including tickets to the World Cup Final, which takes place at Old Trafford in November.

As I write this blog, so far over 50 clubs have been supported this year. The draw runs until Grand Final weekend and we have some exciting activations planned for the next few months to raise awareness and also to help drive much-needed funds into community clubs and foundations. Last year the funds raised by clubs went on everything from new kit and equipment, lawnmowers and a clubhouse refurbishment. Play Fund Win provided all the marketing support clubs could need in order to push the draw out to players, members and supporters, with £3.50 from the sale of each ticket going directly to the club you choose to support and the same is true for every entry in this year’s draw.

To find out more about our relationship with the RFL, about the draw itself, or to look at starting your own digital fundraising journey with us then please contact me on David.broadbent@playfundwin.com and I’ll be happy to answer any questions that you may have!
